DIY Dry Shampoo for Dark Hair

A homemade dry shampoo is easy to make, but most ingredients are usually suitable for lighter color hair. Our DIY dry shampoo powder for dark hair uses all natural ingredients that won’t show on your hair line.

This natural dry shampoo for dark hair can be customized to your hair color.

Mix together this dry shampoo in 5 minutes or less. Not only will it save you money, it is a non-toxic beauty hack, too!

You may already have these ingredients in your kitchen pantry!

A jar of cocoa powder and a brush are placed on a table.

Homemade Dry Shampoo for Dark Hair

We used Black Velvet cacao powder because it is a very dark powder suitable for brunettes with darker hair. It can be substituted with standard cocoa powder.

Measurements will depend on your unique hair color. This is the ratio of what worked for our tester’s jet black hair. You may need to alter the measurements for your tone.

How to Use This DIY Dry Shampoo Powder

  • Use a blush brush to dab the dry shampoo into your hair.
  • You may want to wrap a dark towel or robe over your shoulders to prevent the powder from getting on your clothing, just as you may when doing your makeup. I find simply leaning over the sink/counter is enough to keep the powder off my clothing.
  • Dab or pat the powder into the roots until you can’t see it anymore, maybe 3-6 times per brush application. Do this along your hair line where your hair and face/neck meet, the part in your hair and anywhere that you know your hair tends to show oiliness.
  • You may want to use a slightly damp dark cloth to wipe around the back of your neck along with your ears and behind your ears. I find a little extra powder tends to fall there when applying and you wouldn’t want to be surprised by realizing that later in the day!
  • I’ll typically finger comb my hair both before and after applying the powder. I do not brush my hair as the rest of my hair will become frizzy. Gently coming out and smoothing my hair with my fingers helps to quickly get it ready for the day.
  • I like to apply the powder as soon as I get up in the morning, I find it takes about 1 full hour to absorb oils and fully improve the look of my hair.
  • The powder does appear darker once applied, so don’t worry if it seems too light as you are making it.
  • Try not to touch your hair, especially around the roots once the powder is settled into your hair, this will help keep your looking fresh longer and discourage more oil production.

Black Velvet Cacao Powder

An incredibly dark cacao powder, this allergen-free powder is what makes this dry shampoo especially suitable for brunettes with very dark hair.

Cocoa Powder

Often used in making chocolate desserts (YUM!), cocoa powder is used in dry shampoos to add a dark color.

Cocoa powder smells so good that we used it in our Coffee Sugar Body Scrub.

Arrowroot Powder

This thickening powder used in cooking is great at absorbing oils on your scalp and in your hair. The gluten-free starch is used as a thickening agent, much like cornstarch.

Arrowroot powder can be used on its own as a dry shampoo alternative, however it is best suited for blond, grey or white hair.

We also use arrowroot in our DIY Beetroot Bronzer and All Natural Blush.

Lemon Peel Powder

Lemon peel is great for the scalp because it has an anti-fungal property which can help with dandruff. The Vitamin C in lemons is great for hair growth and keeping your scalp clean.

Our Homemade Anti-Fungal Foot Powder uses lemon peel powder, too.
