Weleda Sea Buckthorn Body Lotion

In my search to find healthier, greener, natural lotions and other body products, Weleda has time and time again stood out among the competition for their unwavering use of organic and even biodynamic (a step beyond organic) ingredients.

weleda sea buckthorn lotionThat’s why I was so excited to try Weleda’s Sea Buckthorn Body Lotion.  After many tries with other brands that seemed to sneak in questionable ingredients such as dimethicone, heavy fragrances or just plain didn’t work, I needed to find a healthy alternative that worked great.  Weleda certainly delivered.

From the first instant I opened Weleda’s Sea Buckthorn Body Lotion, I knew it was something special.  The heavy cobalt blue glass bottle gives a hint of the luxurious product inside.  Weleda’s Sea Buckthorn body lotion is at once thin enough to pour easily but rich enough to deliver superior moisturizing.  And the smell is just heavenly….a faint hint of what I’m assuming is sea buckthorn, but to me it smells just like sunshine.

sea buckthornIf you’ve never heard of Sea Buckthorn, you’re not alone. The summer shrub is native to Europe and Asia and brings forth red edible berries that are rich in unsaturated fatty acids, carotenoids and Vitamin E.  In fact, with its rich vitamin content, sea buckthorn helps protect the skin from UV radiation and free radical damage.

With a rich base of sesame seed oil and the natural goodness of sea buckthorn, Weleda’s Sea Buckthorn Body Lotion is a fabulous all natural moisturizer, especially for dry or damaged skin.  It kept my skin soft and moisturized all day long.

While Weleda’s Sea Buckthorn Body Lotion has not been rated by the Campaign for Safe Cosmetics, Weleda has signed the coalition’s Compact for Safe Cosmetics and it’s Sea Buckthorn Body Oil ranks an amazing zero on the safety scale (Zero is the best, while 10 is the worst for safety among personal care products and cosmetics).

The only problem that I can find with this Weleda product?  The price.  At $20.00 for 3.4 ounces of lotion, this isn’t a budget buy.  But in all honesty, it’s worth it.  First of all, 3.4 ounces doesn’t sound like much, but the product is so super concentrated that you just need a little bit, and it does last longer than you’d think. Second, the ingredients are so pure and beneficial and the lotion is so deeply hydrating that I can see why it costs so much.  Growing plants and other ingredients in an organic or even biodynamic way is not cheap, but it is worth it as far as the health and safety of your body as well as the planet.  Not saying that I can afford it, but I can see where they’re coming from!  So hopefully it will be offered on www.vitacost.com soon so I can stock up and save.

If you’re looking for all natural body care products that are as good for you as they are for the Earth, I highly suggest Weleda.  Their products work, they’re made from fine ingredients with proven results, and Weleda has been ”cultivating beauty” since 1921.

Small EarthWhy It’s Better For the Earth:  Weleda uses organic and biodynamic ingredients, meaning that no synthetic pesticides or fertilizers are required to grow the crops.  When you use as many crops as Weleda does in processing their body care products, that’s a huge positive impact on the Earth, since pesticides and fertilizers end up in waterways, killing off vegetation and marine life.

Small SunshineWhy It’s Better For Your Health:  Applying all natural ingredients to your skin is much better than lathering up with synthetic chemicals, artificial preservatives and even petroleum byproducts.  Your skin absorbs up to 60% of what you put on it, meaning those products then get into your bloodstream.  What do you want being absorbed into your body?
