Feline Pine Cat Litter – A Healthier Alternative

2009

If you’ve got a cat, chances are that you go through a lot of cat litter. And if you’re using traditional cat litters, you could be using a product that is compromising your pet’s health, not to mention your own.

Traditional cat litters are made with bentonite clay. This clay, while natural, is non-biodegradable and requires strip mining to aquire. When you pour this cat litter into a litter box, clouds of dust rise through the air…..dust that’s made of silica, a known carcinogen.  Just proving that even all-natural products can be dangerous – you’ve just got to know what to look out for.

You obviously don’t want to be inhaling a known carcinogen, and your cats don’t want to be eating it, either, but that’s just what happens. Cat litter gets stuck on their paws, they clean themselves and then they’ve ingested the product. Because it won’t break down or biodegrade, the cat litter can build up in your cat’s digestive system and cause serious health problems.

Traditional cat litters can also contain chemicals and perfumes (made of chemicals) to help eliminate and neutralize odors.  You don’t want to be breathing in these things, either.  Perfumes can often be made of chemicals containing phthalates, which are under intense scrutiny right now for acting as hormone disruptors and causing a wide range of problems, from thyroid to reproductive diseases.

feline pineThe good news is there is an alternative. Feline Pine is a natural cat litter made of biodegradable pine. It’s made of pine shavings reclaimed from lumber production and the harmful wood oils have been removed, creating a healthy alternative that benefits both your cat and the Earth.

Feline Pine is widely available at pet stores and mass market retailers. Yes, it’s probably going to cost more.  But considering there’s probably not a lot of other things you have to buy specifically for your cat’s needs, except for food and health products, it might be a wise investment to treat your kitty to a healthier place to do his business.  After all, he’s going to be going there and walking through the stuff several times a day.

Why It’s Better For Your Health:  You, and your kitty, won’t be breathing in silica, a known carcinogen, or toxic chemicals and perfumes that can be contained in the dust of traditional bentonite clay cat litters.

Why It’s Better For the Earth:  No strip mining for bentonite clay.  Reusing wood shavings that would otherwise have been discarded.  Using a biodegradeable product means it will then break down in the landfills, unlike clay cat litters which are just helping to contribute to a really nasty cat litter box effect in our country’s landfills…..Ewww!  Can you just imagine the smell??
